Book: Corner Shop

My current read: Corner Shop by Roopa Farooki

In this world there are only two tragedies. One is not getting what one wants, and the other is getting it - Oscar Wilde.

Farooki uses this concept as the theme for his book - what do you do when you have achieve your dream too early in life?

The setting of the story: A multicultural family in London.

Lucky is obsessed with two things - playing in the World Cup for England, and Portia, the girl who work in his grandfather' shop.

His dad is Jinan, a successful Bengali lawyer. His mum, Delphine, a Frenchwoman, who used to have a top career in the corporate world and is now a Knightbridge's housewife.

The one character who connect all of them is Lucky's grandfather, Zaki who runs a cornershop in an unfashionable part of town. In his youth, he dreamed of having a carefree life, and not following the footstep of his dad of becoming a shopkeeper, but a tragedy forces him to take this route.

It's a story about lost dream and looking at the past and asking the question 'What if'. It's also about getting what you want early in life, and wondering, 'Now what'.

Personally for me, I like the background of London in the book as it reminds me of the city. I'm only halfway through it and so far it's been a good funny read.
