Anna Olson in Malaysia

Event: An Evening with Anna Olson
Date: 28 November 2010 (Sunday)
Venue: Electrolux Concept Store in Kota Damansara, Selangor

Celebrity chef Anna Olson (host of Sugar and Fresh with Anna Olson in AFC (Asian Food Channel) was in Malaysia for the first time recently as part of her Southeast Asian Tour.

While demonstrating the baking of her signature banana caramel cheesecake, she raves about gula melaka and how she has tried durian ("I have tried the D24!") but she couldn't come to the conclusion whether she loves or hates it. She also relates her funny experiences/disasters in the kitchen.

Xandria Ooi, the emcee of the day also helped Anna in the baking.

The cake was yummy! Here's the recipe for you to try

Banana Caramel Cheesecake Recipe by Anna Olson
(Serve 9-12)

Crust
12 Crunchy oatmeal cookies
1/2 cup pecan pieces
1/4 unsalted butter, melted

Banana Layer
2tbsp unsalted butter
1/4 cup light brown sugar, packed
1 tbsp rum or lemon juice
3 firm bananas, sliced

Cheesecake
Approx. 910g cream cheese, room temperature
1 cup light brown sugar, packed
2 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
Seeds from 1 vanilla bean
5 Large eggs

Caramel Topping
1 1/2 cups sugar
1/4 cup water
1 tbsp corn syrup or lemon juice
1 cup whipping cream

Method:
1. For crust, preheat oven to 180'C. Grease the bottom of a 23-cm springform pan and wrap the outside of the pan in foil.

2. In a food processor, pulse oatmeal cookies with pecans to an even crumble. Add melted butter and pulse to combine. Press into the bottom of prepared springform pan (not up the sides) and bake for 12 minutes. Allow to cool while preparing bananas.

3. For banana layer, heat a saute pan over medium-high heat. Add butter and brown sugar, stirring until melted and bubbling. Stir in the rum or lemon juice and add bananas. Stir just to coat and warm. Pour into cooled crust.

4. For cheesecake, beat the cream cheese until fluffy, scraping down the sides of the bowl often. Add sugar in 2 additions, beating well after each addition. Beat in butter and vanilla bean seeds. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Pour the cheesecake batter over caramelised banana layer in springform pan.

5. Place springform pan into a baking dish and pour hot tap water around it to come halfway up the pan. Bake for 30 minutes, then reduce oven temperature to 160'C and bake for 30 to 40 minutes, until filling puffs just slightly around edges but still moves a little in the centre when shaken. Remove the pan from water and allow to cool for 2 hours before refrigerating overnight.

6. For caramel topping, combine sugar, water and corn syrup or lemon juice in a pot. Bring to a boil without stirring and cook, uncovered, until it turns a rich amber colour. While cooking, occasionally brush down the sides of the pot with a brush dipped in cool water.

7. Once the sugar has reached desired colour, about 7 minutes, remove from heat and carefully stir in whipping cream (watch out for the steam and bubbling). Return to medium heat and simmer until reduced by a third, stirring occasionally, about 5 minutes. Chill until thickened but still fluid, about 15 minutes. Pour caramel over cheesecak and chill completely. (This can be done up to 8 hours before serving).

8. To serve, run a knife carefully along the inside of the pan to loosen, remove pan and slice with a hot, dry knife.

Snow Patrol - Crack The Shutters

My song for the weekend, Snow Patrol - Crack the Shutter

If I ever meet Gary Lightbody or any members of the band, I would ask them - what's the meaning behind this music video? The song is lovely but the video, what's it all about?

Crack the shutters open wide,
I wanna bathe you in the light of day,
And just watch you as the rays
Tangle up around your face and body,
I could sit for hours finding new ways
To be awed each minute,
Cuz' the daylight seems to want you
Just as much as I want you.

Serendah Waterfall

Deepavali was a holiday but I woke up early for a trip to Serendah Waterfall. Was a little bit disappointed when all I saw was this main fall. There were also a playground nearby and a shelter in front of the pool; the whole place looks like a dilapidated resort - not the kind of natural place I wanted.

However, the view of the main fall was not bad. The water was not deep and at my height of slightly over five feet tall, the water reached my chest at maksimum level. At least I have the opportunity to experience the tranquility behind the waterfall. The only sound I could heard was the water rushing down yet it still feels quiet. It was a nice change from all the noise in the city.

We have a BBQ picnic and the guys used a small piece of tyre to start the burning of the charcoal. The smell of rubber burning was horrible!

My friend showed us a new way to cook egg! He was using a lemongrass stick as a spatula.

It's nicely DONE! Not sure the taste though, did not try. But someone bought a pot for Maggi mee and they used it to boil some eggs. We peeled the shell off and ate it while chest-deep in the water!

Look at the plastic bottle. I hate to see this.

Please leave only your footprint behind when you are in the nature. Who's going to pick after your rubbish?!

Octoberfest @ 1 Utama

The RM1 Beer promotion was back at the 1 Utama Octoberfest! With wo 50 cents coins, we can exchange a bottle of 500ml Oktoberfestbier with 6.1% abv. The Lowenbrau is very carbonated - bad idea to drink it fast, especially on half empty stomach. That was what I did and it got to my head fast!

This was the place where the beers were kept cold before distribution. On the first day, it was finished within half an hour!

There were Tigers, Heneiken and Guiness as well but I'm more interested in these imported beers. One buckets (5 bottles) for RM50 for 300ml - Leffe, Stella, Hoergarden, Asahi, Crown Lager, Budweiser, Victoria Bitter, Cider. That's meant RM10 per bottle!

There were also Erdingers , Franziskaner, Konig Ludwig and Lowenbrau Original.

Models wearing German traditional clothing of Dirndl and Trachten.

We made some new friends who gave us these lovely hats!

Beers and good companions - it's another fun night!

Sid's Beerfest 2010

It was a lovely Sunday afternoon at Sid's Beerfest!

Heineken, Tiger & Guinness for RM5! It was served in the plastic cup.

But I went for Paulaner! Strongbow and Killkenny were also RM10.

There were also a lot of imported beer on sales in bottles. Priced between RM15 and RM25.

The venue was actually at the garden in front of the pub. It was such a laid back event. Everyone was really chilling out, drinking beers - everything else does not matter on that afternoon. One of the best events for me. Love it! Thanks Sid's Pub. Cheers!

Girls love flowers

Guys friend always asked me:

What is a good first gift to give to a girl that I like?

What should I give to my girlfriend as apology?

Answer: Flowers

It's the best and safest gift to give as your first or as an apology. It's not too cheap or expensive. And even if she doesn't like you, she won't say no and return the flower to you; she will just throw it away or give it to someone else... without your knowledge of course J

Most girls will say flowers are a waste of money, that they rather have CASH (who doesn't) but really, they don't mind receiving it, especially in the office - as she can show-off in front of her colleagues.

If she is a chocolate lover, then you can also give her a Ferrero chocolate bouquet or chocolate gift basket or hamper!

By the way, I didn't receive that flowers. It belongs to a client; I just borrow it to pose for a photo!

Book: Corner Shop

My current read: Corner Shop by Roopa Farooki

In this world there are only two tragedies. One is not getting what one wants, and the other is getting it - Oscar Wilde.

Farooki uses this concept as the theme for his book - what do you do when you have achieve your dream too early in life?

The setting of the story: A multicultural family in London.

Lucky is obsessed with two things - playing in the World Cup for England, and Portia, the girl who work in his grandfather' shop.

His dad is Jinan, a successful Bengali lawyer. His mum, Delphine, a Frenchwoman, who used to have a top career in the corporate world and is now a Knightbridge's housewife.

The one character who connect all of them is Lucky's grandfather, Zaki who runs a cornershop in an unfashionable part of town. In his youth, he dreamed of having a carefree life, and not following the footstep of his dad of becoming a shopkeeper, but a tragedy forces him to take this route.

It's a story about lost dream and looking at the past and asking the question 'What if'. It's also about getting what you want early in life, and wondering, 'Now what'.

Personally for me, I like the background of London in the book as it reminds me of the city. I'm only halfway through it and so far it's been a good funny read.

Food: The BIG PAU

Have u ever used a knife to slice a pau (steamed bun)?

You need to when it is the famous Yip Chee May tai pau from Taman Connaught....

Taste? I didn't try because I don't like big meaty bun but those who did, said it's good.
